In this sector, which is comprised of the agri-food and non-food markets, major companies with the capacities to adapt to market developments rub shoulders with a multitude of SMEs that have to evolve in order to survive. On the non-food market, which will very soon suffer from excess capacity, businesses will have to restructure and reexamine their offers. In agri-food, although major companies have managed to hold their own by streamlining, the many small operators are struggling and often have complicated relationships with distributors. Profits are plummeting and their long-term future is under threat.
However, striving for greater volumes is not the solution. Vertical integration strategies, with associations upstream to avoid the hazards of inevitable increases in the price of raw materials, and procedures to enhance productivity and achieve international growth, are the emerging key drivers of success. This struggle to ensure a long-term future has brought about new challenges for the sector in terms of human resources and employment.
